Project Overview

A Driver App for Collecting Recyclable Metals

adaptive public transport preview

ScrapBees needed a driver app that would act as a link between the back office and the drivers

challenge

Optimising Operations

ScrapBees — They collect scrap metal wherever it accumulates, offering technical expertise in identifying and sorting it. Their 40 drivers receive orders for collecting recyclable metals via a tablet app. This app needed to be completely redesigned to better support drivers with labor-intensive tasks on construction sites and optimize processes.

By spending time with drivers and the back office (ride-alongs, interviews, JTBD workshop), we at Telling iteratively developed a solution designed to support the daily routines and problems of drivers and office staff.

Supporting the Drivers

The new app serves as the primary point of contact for drivers. It provides an overview of the tasks they need to complete and supports them in digitizing recycling receipts. This gives both drivers and the back office better control over the status of each deal.

Overview of Deals

The Deals tab gives drivers an overview of all deals they are assigned to for each day with their most important information depending on their status. It shows them the status of each deal using color and iconography. If tasks are open, a shortcut to those tasks appears.

Iconography

Icons give additional information about the deal to the drivers.

Deal Details

When a deal is selected, the driver is shown all details about that deal and letting them start completing tasks.

Deal Tasks

Tasks must be completed before materials are taken to a scrapyard. Drivers must track their time, take pictures, weigh some of the materials, and double-check the serial numbers.

Scrapyards

The Scrapyard tab gives drivers a list of possible scrapyards close with internal recommendations. Drivers are also reminded what type of scrap is in their truck, as scrapyards are selective about which scrap they take.

Scrapyard Tasks

To finish a deal, all tasks must be completed. This includes photographing receipts, entering delivered materials, and dividing ratios if multiple deals were brought to the scrapyard at once.
